Welcome to The Long Run
The Long Run is premised on a simple idea: The fight for the future of the Democratic Party is the most important and interesting story in politics right now — and the nation’s Democratic governors are central to that story.
I believe this story is enormously significant: What emerges from the other side of Democrats’ current struggle will reverberate for potentially decades to come. The Long Run will aggressively cover every facet of that story, from state policy decisions to 2026 campaigns to 2028 moves.
The Long Run is supported in part by the Local News Hub, as well as the contributions of readers like you. All editorial decisions are made independently — no one tells me what I should or shouldn’t say or report on.

About Steve Morris
I have nearly a decade of experience in political journalism, during which I have broken national news, traveled the country, and interviewed dozens of members of Congress, Cabinet officials, and political operatives at the top of the game. My work has been featured or published in outlets like the New Republic, Politico, the Washington Post, and Axios, among others. Most recently, I covered national politics at The Recount, where I continue to host a monthly YouTube series that has accumulated over three million views.
My own background is unique for this industry; I grew up in the religious right and built a career in journalism without a college degree. I don’t pretend to have no personal views. But I will always strive to be fair and genuinely open-minded about different ideas and perspectives. I’ve grown and learned enough in my life to know that’s a prerequisite for any serious, substantive work.
